The Maui Food Scene

The island of Maui has no shortage of good food. The challenge, however, is in finding the worthy gems hidden in curious industrial buildings, food truck lots, and resort towns.

The food scene on the valley isle can be described as polarizing. From homely and comforting convenience bites to the high-end resort dining – Maui offers a variety of tasty options for those willing to experience the flavors of the island.

With a local demographic comprised of Native Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Caucasian, and Japanese communities – the food scene is a reflection of these cultural flavors.

From laulau (Hawaiian cuisine) to sushi (Japanese) and a mix of both – poke, Maui cuisine offers a variety of eateries that celebrate the rich multicultural community.

We hope you enjoy eating your way through the valley isle.

5. Papaʻāina

Ahupuaʻa/District: Lahaina

Promising Review:

“It is an interesting menu, and the chef is obviously creative. Nice to see local coffees featured too so we supported them by ordering the 100% Maui Red and it tasted great.  So did the Smoked Sunrise cocktail I ordered with a chile rim and smokey Mezcal kick.  I was torn between the fish and eggs or the ‘Aina rice.  I picked the fish which was swordfish and it was pricey at $32, especially when it arrived in a small-looking cast iron pan.  However the pepper sauce was very tasty and spicy, the fish was a large portion and there were 2 eggs, along with a lot of rice n kimchi so it was actually full of protein and very filling. Hubbs chose the cult breakfast ramen and was not disappointed, fragrant with bacon and savory broth with eggy noodles and a beautifully poached egg wobbling in the middle.  A delicious take on bacon n eggs!.” – Tracy C.

Order:

  • Breakfast Ramen
  • Ocean Bowl
  • French Toast
  • Hoisin Smoked Pork

6. Hailiʻimaile General Store

Ahupuaʻa: Hamākuapoko

District: Hailiʻimaile

Promising Review:

“Excellent food, vibes, and service. This place looks and feels very casual but the food is excellent high-end farm-to-table cuisine.  I had the seasonal catch of the day encrusted in parmesan and served over risotto.  My husband had a short rib. We also tried their famous crab pizza and pineapple upside-down cake, and both were incredible.  This place is famous for a reason, despite its slightly off-the-beaten-path location (about 10 minutes from Paia). Definitely worth a stop!” – Soo H.

Order:

  • Mushroom Steamed Bao Buns
  • Seafood Coconut Curry

7. Ululaniʻs Shave Ice

Ahupuaʻa/District: Wailuku

Promising Review:

“This is the most famous shaved ice place on Maui for a reason. There is usually a 20-30 minute wait, but it’s worth it! We ordered the Haleakala and No Ka Oi – “The Best”. The ice was so fluffy and the syrups were super fresh. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the top flavors. I highly recommend adding the mochi. Those pillows of perfect chewiness are a perfect topping. It was my wife’s first time trying good shaved ice and she said it was “life-changing” lol.” – Jason L.

Promising Review:

“Amazing food. No fancy seating but some benches with some bird poop BUT the view is incredible. We had the pork, hamburger, etc. all super yummy! Eat it quickly before the ants try to eat you and your food! My kids enjoyed the Mac (Mac salad) so much and they usually don’t like it; they told me this restaurant created a new “like” and that’s a like for Mac salad. They sometimes have BBQ specials and we are coming back tomorrow for that. Just a great solid Hawaiian meal after a plane ride; just what we needed when arriving in Maui! Perfect for a quick lunch. “Highlights: The food is impeccable. I tried loads of restaurants in Maui and this place really stood out in its food quality and flavor. Promising Review:

“Not much I can add to the reviews on here – everything about the Gazebo Restaurant is OUTSTANDING. Mac nut pancakes with white chocolate chips and uber sweet whipped cream are probably the pinnacle (so soft! so sweet! so fluffy!), but everything else – the encore menu, the sweeping seaside view, the quick service – all top-notch. And yes, there is usually an extremely long line in the morning, but it’s definitely worth it. Have a member of your party wait in line if possible while everyone else does their morning duties.” – Leanna W.

16. Mamaʻs Fish House

Ahupuaʻa: Hamākuapoko

District: Pāʻia

Promising Review:

A meal to remember. We booked, had to cancel, and then called daily at 9 am to try to score a bar reservation. Sure enough, we finally got one with a few days to spare on our recent trip to Maui. It was absolutely worth the effort.

The location is lovely, particularly if you are stationed in Lahaina or Kihei. It gives you a reason to head to Paia, go to Baldwin Beach and Hookipa Beach, and perhaps also to Makawao for some great boutique shopping. We found the restaurant homey and open, even in the bar area.

But the food is why you should go and there wasn’t a thing that we wouldn’t love to eat again. From the sashimi to the incredibly moist Mahi, the best lobster tail we’ve ever had, the poke, the desserts (get the pearl, yes, but also the banana mac crisp) but above and beyond, the BEST curry we’ve ever enjoyed. It was absolutely, positively divine. They were also very accommodating to our children, especially our shellfish-allergy daughter…for a restaurant with so many shellfish-focused dishes, they really understood and were so kind in recommending great options for everyone. The drinks, especially the scorpion, were also pretty darn incredible.” – Julie B.

Runner-Up:

  • Tristan Island Lobster
  • Ahi Tahitian with Coconut milk & lime
  • Mahimahi with Hamakua mushrooms
  • Polynesian Black Pearl Lilikoʻi Mousse in Chocolate Seashell

17. Grandmaʻs Coffee House

Ahupuaʻa: Kula

District: Keōkea

Promising Review:

“Grandma’s Coffee House is probably a great stop if you want to go to the Lavender farm or are coming down from Haleakala. Grandma’s is definitely a hidden gem … the place is small and there’s not too much parking, but if you get there early, you should be able to find a spot close to the eatery’s entrance. Grandma’s is actually one of the hidden gems I really liked most on Maui. It’s quaint and unassuming, and it looks like it’s been around for years.” – Kelly S.

Promising Review:

“We stopped by on our way down from Haleakala – it was the perfect time around 9 am – no line and a ton of goodies to pick from! We ordered a bunch of different treats but the best ones had to be the stick donuts, long johns, and malasada stick. If you don’t get anything else, you gotta at least try those three. So tasty! The donuts are so fluffy and not too sweet. Honestly, you can probably have a whole stack of donuts to yourself. My only regret was not buying more! ” – Annabelle H.

20. Like Poke? Food Truck

Ahupuaʻa: Wailuku

District: Kahului

Promising Review:

“I have had the ahi katsu, ahi katsu sampler (comes with spicy, katsuyaki, and regular sauces), furikake fries, and the fried poke.  Oh my gosh — there must be something in the sauce cuz it stays addictive!  I haven’t tried the regular poke yet (they have plenty of flavors) because those other things are so good.  The fried poke is a nice way to present the poke — it’s more delicate than the ahi katsu — the breading isn’t panko, so it stays moister.  Both are flavorful.” – Ashleigh D.

Order:

  • Hurricane Fried Poke
  • Furikake Fries
  • Spicy Ahi Salad

21. Tight Tacos

Ahupuaʻa/District: Wailuku

Promising Review:

“Don’t judge a delicious fish taco by its building.
But seriously, best fish taco (and I forget the fresh catch of the day). Sam assured me I would like it and not only did I like it, I loved it. The fresh fish was deep fried in some deliciousness and was the perfect crunch with no grease. The house-made tarter sauce was perfect. Don’t even get me started about the corn side, just get it. You won’t be disappointed, not exaggerating, Best fish taco I have ever had ( and I grew up in FL)” – Jeanine N.

27. Bistro Casanova

Ahupuaʻa/District: Wailuku

Promising Review:

“Linguine pescatore, paella and carbonara rigatoni have been our favorites. Mussels, clams, shrimp, calamari, and scallops can be found with black squid ink pasta in a brothy tomato sauce. The seafood is fresh and the homemade linguine is flavorful. The carbonara rigatoni is rich and creamy with egg, bacon, and onions. The homemade large rigatoni really elevates this dish. Paella has been the best to share. It’s loaded with seafood, chicken, and Italian sausage links over a bed of paella. This always has something for everyone and can be easily shared amongst 2-3 people. Don’t forget to add on an appetizer. Can’t go wrong with their caesar salad or calamari. All dishes come with fresh Foccacia bread and herbed butter. Have not dined in for a while, but the takeout service has been amazing. “If you’re in the neighborhood, Shikeda is a must. A small storefront in a food court, they offer tasty bento boxes and exquisite patisserie. The mango choux dusted with li-hing & the strawberry guava pavlovas were my favorite. “I ordered a mini ‘da works’ bowl and added a scoop of the Ube stuff and the lilikoi butter for just $0.50 each! What I really liked about this place – because I know there are numerous açaí bowl spots on the island – is that the prices are reasonable, they have yummy ingredients (like the add one I mentioned), and the customer service was wonderful and they were fast even though they were clearly busy.

It’s right by Costco and the airport so make sure you make a stop here during your trip sometime! If you’re local, they have a five stars reward system.” – Sara D.

I came here twice on the same day, which should say how delicious this place is.

Unfortunately, there have only been a handful of restaurants that have been able to seat us together at one table so we really appreciated being able to dine together here. Ordered the Kalua Moco and it was tasty! Promising Review:

“Great food and fun atmosphere. The tables have a griddle where you can make your own pancakes. Kids loved it. The restaurant also serves from the kitchen. Food prices were reasonable but alcohol was way too much for this style of restaurant. I would have loved a mimosa or Bloody Mary but wasn’t going to spend $12ish for one. If you’re looking for scenery or atmosphere this isn’t the place. It’s in a strip mall and overall feels more like a Denny’s than an authentic local restaurant. There’s no outdoor seating. Also great service. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. I recommend this place if you have kids and want a family friendly meal. Otherwise you may be better off along the shore.” – Nick W.

44. Minit Stop

Ahupuaʻa/District: Wailuku

Promising Review:

“The top best sellers are the legendary Minit Stop fried chicken and potato wedges! I believe this is why they call it MAUI’S Fried ChickenThis is the location in the heart of Kahului, right on Dairy Road as you leave or on your way to the airport. lt sounds crazy but this is one of the places that we stop before mainland sometimes to bring to our friends. Plus, how can you resist all the hurricane options. You will have to get the fried chicken, wedges, and the F’real.” – Doreen B.

45. Down The Hatch

Ahupuaʻa/District: Lahaina

Promising Review:

“It was a little difficult finding the right place to enter the outdoor restaurant but completely worth it. The staff was super nice and worked hard the entire time we were there. We had the Lobster cheese Sandwich, lava lava chicken sandwich and mermaid chicken tenders, and Ahi Samurai. Each we’re filling to the point we left some bread behind from the sandwiches. Flavors were well put together and the sauces added a nice richness to the plates. Across the board, it was a good experience and we would eat there again.” – Bryan D.

“Oh goodness, this place is great. If I could open a place in California this is what it would be! Cool vibe!
Made a quick stop before doing our trip to Hana. Great vibe and a nice selection for all. Avocado toast, croissant sandwich, and açaí bowl were some of what we had. It was all great. Our waitress was super helpful and gave some nice advice for our trip ahead. Wish we could make it there again.” – Patty B.

47. Koiso Sushi

Ahupuaʻa: Kula

District: Kīhei

Promising Review:

“After scouring many articles, I was keen on eating at the best sushi place in Kihei, Hawaii. I called on Friday to get 3 seats last minute for Sat/Tues (closed Sun & Mon) & I was lucky to get a call back due to a cancellation. Thank you universe for answering my prayers as we’re from Houston, Texas. Everything was amazing. We got 3 omakase ($50/each), then broiled black cod, & an order of otoro, salmon belly, & unagi (2 pcs nigiri). As a sushi connoisseur, it was some of the best otoro I’ve had in my life. the eel, also to die for! The cod was succulent & juicy. If I’m ever back in Maui, I’ll be sure to visit again. 11/10 recommend. Pro tip: be sure to make a reservation a month in advance as they only offer 6 PM & 7:30 PM seatings due to the small, intimate setting.” – Michelle L.

  • Otoro

48. Moku Roots

Ahupuaʻa/District: Lahaina

Promising Review:

“Menu is focused on American beers, sake, expansive wine, cocktails, and sushi but you can get appetizers, ribeye, fish and chips, and desserts. We sampled the 12-piece Nigiri Combo, Hamachi Sashimi, and Jalapeño with yuzu, and a Spider Crab Roll. Then moved on to White Dragon Roll, and California Roll. It was just enough for 3 and it came out to around a hefty $175 with the tip. Note: The bill comes with clever suggested 18, 20, & 25% gratuities but you can calculate your own. Not inexpensive or particularly attractively garnished, but the fish was fresh and service was fast, pretty great and attentive without being too pushy.” – Dean L.

  • Falafel Wrap

Promising Review:

“Hamburger steak is so action. Small kine crisp on em. Still ring finger perfect in the middle. Buggah stay packed with flavor and served with the most awesome brown gravy. They do Loco Moco too but sometimes bruddahs like em stripped down and simple (aka hemo da egg). This place does em right. If you local and haven’t hit this place up yet, this review is for you. If you not, sorry google translate doesn’t work for Hawaii pidgin. You should check em out anyway.” – Joe J.

50. Thai Mee Up

Ahupuaʻa: Wailuku

District: Kahului

Promising Review:

“Landed in Maui today, we did the Costco run before checking in then hit a food truck just outside the parking lot. I have to admit, loading my car in the Costco lot the scent of something really good was permeating across the parking lot. The trucks are located right across the way. The smell of garlic and goodness took us to the truck lot. We had the grilled Garlic Ahi along with an order of Drunken Noodles. My picture has the Sirachi spread already, please excuse me. The tuna was amazing! Garlic, cabbage, and Chinese broccoli. We ordered chicken with our Drunken Noodles and they were equally amazing. From Vegas to Maui today and as we watch the sunset with a cocktail the Ahi and noodles are a point of our conversation. Small business here in Maui, worth a stop!” – Robert R.

Order:

  • Chicken Pad Thai
  • Garlic Salmon
  • Lemongrass Chicken
  • Drunken Noodles
